Today, we mark the writing of Lou Rushlow in The Attleboro Sun from November 1964, just after the Attleboro-North Attleboro Thanksgiving football game:
The Attleboro firefighters, under the direction of Capt. Norm Jackson, should be credited with the playing of yesterday's game. They were at the field early enough to get the accumulation of water from the playing area. The really bad areas were filled with dried dirt and play was on, only delayed 30 minutes.
The stands on both sides were crammed with alumni, many of whom were home from college for the holiday.
It was a sweet 22-14 victory, North can give credit to not only the players, but the coaching staff headed by Art Post who was rumored throughout the Attleboros a few weeks back as "being on the way out." Looking across the field from the press box, Post was just as fired up as his squad.
Think about everyone in the stands was as shocked as Tom Ruest when John Shockro intercepted a pass in the second quarter. Then on the next play Al Zito threw right into the waiting arms of Ruest, who just jaunted downfield some 31 yards for the final North score of the game.
Senior members of the Attleboro squad were Jay Gilmore, Doug Adler, Jim Drake, Lenny Lallier, Joe Jillson, John Shockro, Al Zito, Steve Brockway, Tim Rogan, Steve Stenberg, Dave Winnegge, Dennis O'Keefe, Dave McKenna and Don Winfree.
Playing their last game for the Rocketeers were Jim Jackson, Larry Stack, Lorin Kinney, Dan Poirier, John Fuller, Dave Alger, Steve Smith, Mike Gould, Leo Fontaine, Scott Lockwood, Darrell Cochran, Wayne Fernald, Howard Boardman and Lou Parker.

When the Attleboro Jaycees approached Sister Mary Urban, principal of Bishop Feehan High School and athletic director Harold "Chet" Hanewich about a permanent trophy for an outstanding athlete at the school, Sister Urban and Hanewich were most appreciative. Then came the problem as to how the trophy should be given. By secret ballot, all members of the football squad voted earlier in the week on the player of their choice, and the votes were counted and kept a deep secret until that halftime ceremonies yesterday against Bishop Stang at Community Field in North Attleboro.
When the announcement was made for Jim Ferrara to come forth to get the award from Ernie Jost, the Mansfield youth was left speechless. Ferrara is every bit deserving of the award since he has been the sparkplug of the Shamrock backfield all season. He really came into his own with a three-touchdown performance against New Bedford Vocational.
In other action...
We'll close off this week with a brief look at church league action, where the headline tells us Lutheran leads the league by a half a game.
St. John kept a perfect slate in the church school league with a 29-24 win over Murray in a game played this past weekend.
In other games, Lutheran remained in front of the pack by one half game with a convincing 58- 34 victory over Evangelical Covenant. Hebronville defeated Second Congo Gold 34-28 and All Saints sent 2nd Congo Blue to their 13th defeat of the season, 37-28.
Mark Rovzar and Bruce Barton were the top guns for St. John, scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively. Although undefeated, St. John trails Lutheran by that half-game margin since they have played three less games than Lutheran.
Lutheran got the scoring punch from Joe Archambeault with 16, Don Gross with 15 and Greg Snyder with 10. The top scorers for Hebronville were Larry Poncin and with 12 and Bob Taylor with 10. That win keeps Hebronville in fourth place. It took a 12-point spree from Glenn Lincoln and 10 points from George MacArthur to give All Saints their third win of the season.
